| Olympian runs over rivals |
|
OLYMPIAN Felicity Abram did what she does best yesterday, running away with proceedings at the inaugural Kingscliff Triathlon. Stamping her authority on the domestic scene, Abrams completed the testing circuit in a blistering 1hour 33minutes and 24seconds, more than two and a half minutes clear of her closest rival. The former ITU Rookie of the Year, Olympic and Commonwealth Games representative’s experience was apparent throughout the 1000m swim, 30km bike ride and 8km run. Tenth out of the water following the swim, Abrams paced herself during the cycle leg before dominating the run to win ahead of Rachael Paxton (1.35.59) and Kym Jaenke (1.38.15). Paul Wiedersehn (1.28:58) won the men’s event ahead of Stephen Madden (1:29:31) and Ricky Swindale (1:29:49) respectively. “Felicity’s run was amazing,” event organiser Kristina Katsanevas said. “She lived up to the expectations and will no doubt be a feature here at events to come. “Paul was impressive too.” In his first attempt at competitive triathlon, local para-triathlete Daniel Trollope upstaged experienced Murwillumbah competitor Bill Chaffey. Trailing by seven minutes after the swim leg, Trollope lifted in the next two disciplines to cross in 02:20:26 with Chaffey (2:22:41) finishing second. A large crowd was on hand to cheer competitors, prompting Katsanevas to promise bigger and better things to come. “For a first run it couldn’t have gone much better,” she said. The inaugural Kingscliff Triathlon was capped at 500 people but the next event, to be held on September 26, will be opened up to 1000. |
