This week USAT began discussing the Article IV swim conduct rules.

The first one is Article 4.1‚ÄĒPermissible Strokes.¬† That rule is an "adminstrative" rule which explains what strokes are legal to use in triathlon. The rule allows the use of any stroke including treading water in place.¬†

Participants often ask if they can use breaststroke or flip over and use backstroke during the swim. The answer is "yes."

Here's the rule:

4.1. Permissible Strokes.

Swimmers may use any stroke to propel themselves through the water and may tread water or float.
