USAT Rules Cycling Conduct: Position

Article 5.10f — Position.

Position is the rule that requires cyclists to ride on the right side of the designated lane. Cyclists who move to the left side of the lane should only do so in order to pass or to avoid a dangerous spot in the road such as a pothole. If an official

observes a cyclist riding to the left hand side of the lane for a period of time greater than 15 seconds without completing a pass, then a penalty is assessed.

Remember, the left side of the lane is the passing lane and should not be used for riding when no pass is imminent.

Here’s the rule:

5.10f. Position.
Except for reasons of safety and when no advantage is gained, all cyclists shall keep to the right of the prescribed course unless passing.
