Here is a hidden gem to simulate the swim and bike portion of the Wildflower Olympic distance triathlon in San Diego: La Jolla shores beach. You can do an open water swim and ride up some steep hills
Swim: Swim from La Jolla Shores to ½-mile buoy and back
Transition: Either parks your vehicle on Vallecitos or in the parking lot at La Jolla shores beach. You will want to use your vehicle for as your transition area.
(head north) Camino del Oro
(turn left) La Jolla Shores Dr
turn left) North Torrey Pines Rd (Stay left at Genesse Ave)
(Note) N. Torrey Pines will become Coast HWY 101
(continue on) Coast HWY 101 to La Costa Ave and Turn around
17-miles at La Costa Ave
Coast HWY 101
(keep right at Genesee Ave) North Torrey Pines Rd
(turn right) La Jolla Shores Dr
(head south) Camino del Oro to transition area/vehicle
34-miles round trip
Be careful when riding this course. It is a beach community which means there is a steady flow of vehicle and foot traffic. Keep your head on a swivel when coming down La Jolla Shores Dr. It is steep and fast and there are cars parked on the street.
Always swim with a friend/training partner. This time of the year the water is still cold, so dress accordingly.
Have fun, be safe and responsible!
